With only a few more days left, 2017 was coming to a close. Birdwise, it turned out to be a good one and my year list was almost 400 species long, which made me happy… almost. I needed 4 more birds to round it up to 400, and as I said, I had only a few more days left. At home, I may find a new bird, perhaps two, but four?

Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) declared the Golden-cheeked Warbler “ endangered ” under the Endangered Species Act. In 2015, a group submitted a petition to FWS to delist the warbler , relying on a study conducted by Texas A&M University that reported a far larger population and much more appropriate habitat than prior studies.

Most serious bird photographers dislike taking pictures of birds wearing rings (or what on the other side of the Atlantic you call bands). I can sympathise, as a shiny new ring, clamped to a bird’s leg, rarely enhances its portrait. The information I received didn’t indicate the age of the bird.

I first met Robert Gallardo in 2009, when I made my first visit to the Neotropics for the Mesoamerican Bird Festival in Honduras. He has recorded over 20 new bird records for Honduras, dozens of new butterflies, new orchid records and even new species for science. They hope to have a working draft completed by the end of 2017.

It actually makes a lot of sense, the geographic features of the isthmus between North America (including Mexico, because Mexico is part of North America) and South America cut across political lines, as do birds. On our recent trip across the north of Australia we were lucky enough to encounter several Sarus Cranes- Grus antigone , which are incredibly tall and elegant birds. Sarus Cranes are a slightly taller species than the Brolga and also appear to be a paler grey. The birds were feeding in the tall dry grass and also close to water.

Way back on 16 May I managed to see my 312 bird species in Queens to add to my Queens list. Somehow I forgot that the last time I predicted what the next ten species I would see in Queens would be was back on 30 December 2013, when my list was sitting at 302. Sooty Shearwater – This will take some more dedicated seawatching.

We have done some bush-walking this week around Broome as the weather permits, but still no luck with finding any Snipe species for the 2017 list ! There are actually a lot less waterbirds than you might expect at some lagoons, but there is just so much water about the birds are spoiled for choice. Two Jack Snipe at roost.

Birding in Germany was okay during the first half of the year but essentially came to an end in June due to several issues, most significantly a move to a different appartment within Heidelberg. The two most prolific contributors, Pat and Tom, have been sharing their birding space in Costa Rica. The beats have now contributed more checklists than birds. During October, 7 countries (Costa Rica, Australia, USA, India, Hong Kong, UK, Serbia) were birded by 11 beats who shared 135 checklists and noted 697 species.
