10,000 Birds

At last count, there are 25 species of birds named for U.S. But only two states have more than one bird named for them: Hawaii and California, with nine and seven extant and eponymous species, respectively. My first California Quail in California, at Point Reyes National Seashore in October 2017. Good birding and happy drinking!

My Birding Goals for 2017

10,000 Birds

Here’s hoping that 2017 is a much better year than 2016! All of 2016 only netted me one new species for Queens, a Greater White-fronted Goose. I will see at least 500 species for the year. So having reached 500 or more species in six of the last ten years makes me confident I can do it again. That really sucks.

Too short-tailed to be a kestrel, it’s a Merlin and the species #400 in barely more than an hour on my first morning at the Kerkini lake! The solution?

What the rings reveal

10,000 Birds

They are of the race islandica , a sub species of the nominate race, limosa. After being ringed my godwit (EY70 137) wasn’t seen again until 1 July 2017, when it was reported from Aldeburgh Town Marshes, not far from where it was first ringed. Whether it has been seen again I don’t know, but I found its history fascinating.
