Birding and Wildlife photography at Limneo Lodge, Kerkini Lake, Greece

10,000 Birds

In 2008, with my family decided to build the Limneo Lodge , a small accommodation with only 9 rooms. In the next year I visited the British Birdfair for the first time, which turned out to be the experience that changed my life. With more than 312 so far recorded bird species, Lake Kerkini National Park offers great birding year-round.

The return of the Old Man

10,000 Birds

They were my target species, and I remember being delighted in not only seeing them well, but finding feeding flocks that were remarkably unconcerned about being watched. Such an intimate encounter with one of the world’s rarest birds was a memorable experience.

A Crowd House of Martins

10,000 Birds

A type of birding experience that I greatly enjoy is one of those moments where I’ve come across a simply huge number of birds. It can be during migration, in an enormous nesting colony, or with a very gregarious species. It was June 14 in 2008, when we stopped by the dam for a nice walk after lunch with family in the mountains.

Accessibility Matters

10,000 Birds

I do not (yet) have any accessibility issues, and my only experience regarding anything akin to accessibility has been limited to the period when my daughter was in a stroller, which presents only a tiny sliver of the challenges faced by many. The refuge has an impressive visitor center that opened in 2008, so it is ADA compliant.

Banded Lapwing visits Broome

10,000 Birds

The last time we had a Banded Lapwing Vanellus tricolor visit was 25th February 2008 and prior to that was 23rd September 2005. The yellow wattles are larger as well, but there are hybrids between the two species with varying amounts of black plumage. We have a rare visitor in Broome at the moment, which is rather nice!

Madagascar’s Lost and Found

10,000 Birds

Paging through a fieldguide, it’s always with a sense of dismay and sadness that I come across reference to an extinct species. Islands, for various reasons, experience more extinctions than continents (with Africa being the only continent not suffering a bird extinction!). This bird was kept in captivity until it died a year later.
