First Post-COVID-19 Birding Trip: Wisconsin and Horicon NWR

I settled on Wisconsin, which is home to one of the Top 25 NWRs for Birding that I have not visited: Horicon NWR. Wisconsin Falconer Legally Traps Snowy Owl

My initial reaction was, “Really, dude, of all the birds that you’re allowed to have in Wisconsin, you choose the bird that is going to make birders who don’t understand falconry angry?” All apprentice falconers are allowed only 1 of 2 species: American Kestrel or Red-tailed Hawk. I personally am on the fence.

As of mid-November 2021, the Collaborative had submitted more than 4,200 checklists (up from 1,700 in 2018) and has observed 691 species in the United States (up from 618). Thus, there are now seven states with 200+ observed species. The state with the largest increase was Arizona , with 139 species added.

What is the State Bird of Connecticut?

Found in all fifty states except for Hawaii, the robin is also the state bird of not just Connecticut, but Michigan and Wisconsin as well. In fact, they are one of the few avian species that can survive on classic American lawns, perhaps explaining why their range is so large. Populations of American Robins are robust to say the least.
