Black-chested Sparrow is one of Paso Ancho’s flagship species. Once I moved to the riverbank, I got to see something else I had never seen before: a Squirrel Cuckoo , drying itself after a good bath. And I, for one, choose not to let the lack of a few species ruin my enjoyment of many more. A Golden Vireo showed up.

But two species really stood out. My first Rose-breasted Grosbeak. A male was also present.

We did get introduced to Geiner Huertas Reyes, who took us for a walk along part of the river and into a public park, where we put together a nice list of 61 species. This Black-cheeked Woodpecker was shot right off the upper patio off our room. Another species in the long name category, would be this Common Chlorospingus.

Little by little, that woodpecker-like voice takes me ever further and yet, I see no bird. It is swimming with its body half-submerged (typical for the species and yet, so strange for songbirds) and often diving. This species is reasonably easy to find if you are in the right kind of habitat – but I am rarely in that type of habitat.

These arid hills, cloaked in a mosaic of deciduous scrub and desert vegetation, form a northern outpost for several Neotropical species while also harboring several key endemics and southwestern Nearctic species. I really wanted to see Gray-crowned Woodpecker and Military Macaw , and I managed to succeed on both counts.

I had hoped that in the circumstances, a few Mountain Chickadees might turn up with them, but no such luck, though I know that the species occurs on Mount Sentinal less than a mile from here. The more traditional scouts of the bird world, Black-capped Chickadees , arrived within hours after the Juncos.

I was high and happy, not from “420” drugs but from the altitude and the anticipation of seeing woodpeckers and owls I had never seen before. Soon Steller’s Jay , both Downy and Hairy Woodpecker , Mountain Chickadee , Pygmy Nuthatch and White-breasted Nuthatch were everywhere. I ticked off 9 lifers.
