I wonder how the birds cope with it but suppose that the dry forest species are more adapted to this fact of dry season life than the birds of the rain on the other side of the country. Olive Sparrow, Rufous-capped Warbler, Banded Wrens, Olivaceous Woodcreeper , and several flycatchers all made it into the list along with several migrants.

If we have to endure yet another invasion from some or another Old World species, at least this one is pleasant to look at. once could conceivably make the argument about House Sparrows too, but I think they’ve worn out their welcome.

And apparently, non-birders are more apt to divide birds into general kinds than species lists. Most of them were pretty good in the Owl-Duck-Pigeon range, but they got bogged down when trying to make the leap from a study skin to a particular page of the field guide for, say, a blackbird or a sparrow. If conditions are right, the Palm Beach Agricultural Area can be teaming with various shorebird species such as Spotted, Solitary, Upland, Buff-breasted, Least, Semipalmated, Western, and Pectoral Sandpiper, Black-bellied and Semipalmated Plover, Long-billed Dowitcher, and Black-necked Stilt. Before the counts, I was hoping to break 100 species, but after 21 parks reported data back to me we’re up to 183 species! found 36 species, including Killdeer (in December!), I underestimated how much the wide geographic distribution of Civil War-related parks would affect the count totals.

Hunting sandhill cranes in Kentucky is a bad idea from a public relations standpoint, considering the growing cadre of birders and nature enthusiasts for whom cranes are a touchstone species. Initiating a hunting season on a large, charismatic species like a crane is no way to resuscitate hunting.

Interestingly, the research found that both species primarily spend their time in trees (83% and 81%) and have the same main food source, hymenopterans (25% each, and no, I have no idea what hymenopterans are either – presumably something with wings). So, basically, the two species do exactly the same things.
