One of various little visited and off the beaten track birding sites in Costa Rica included in the recently published second edition of a book I wrote, “How to See, Find, and Identify Birds in Costa Rica” , this lovely place also has a butterfly enclosure, a turtle exibit, and several snakes on display (yes!). Personally I wasn’t happy, but I do not live there and do not have a septic tank in my backyard, so I felt that I had no right to complain. Once I observed a man walking his two small dogs here, passing by a perched White-tailed Eagle but looking down at grass and not noticing the largest raptor in Europe at all.

a couple sea turtles, and a jumping sailfish but no birds. Including this one perched on a sea turtle. And yet there it was, shining white as soft atoll sand, my much wanted lifer White Tern foraging in front of us, foraging next to the boat, even flying right over the boat. Were there going to be any birds?

On the first trip in 2012 we used public transport to get there and the train conveniently gets you to Macarthur Square shopping centre and you can then get a bus that drops you right at the entrance to the park. At the bank of one such small dam, a Softshell Turtle basks in the afternoon sun, while one Oriental Magpie-Robin is searching the water edge. In the dry season, surface water becomes hard to find and the park officials have created four larger dams, but also numerous small ones wherever the road crosses the river.

While I was there rather late, but this series of posts could give you an idea of what’s possible for a birder going at the right time of year. My lifer Blue Rock Thrush. I had spent the morning on Navarre Beach, walking the pier looking for sea turtles and dolphins, then making my way down the beach. I couldn’t even believe it – there was a Gray Kingbird right there! It was a Gray Kingbird all right, appearing just moments after I wondered if I would ever see one.

We had contacted the staff at the observatory, and with Jonnies help, arranged to stay right there in their newly built hostel type facility. The staff there was friendly and very helpful, it is a great place to stay that is very reasonable, and it puts you right in the middle of an amazing amount of birding areas.

The first two photos were actually taken right from my hotel room. Only two other bird species showed up at the pheasant hide, besides the scruffy juvenile male: Oriental Turtle Doves (which despite my limited appreciation of doves and pigeons, actually look kind of ok) … … and Grey Bushchat.

Don’t get me wrong, I loved every critter we observed, from the alligators to gar to turtles, but I remained on the look-out for one species in particular: the Purple Gallinule. . Cute right? Purple Gallinules are what rainbows would look like if reincarnated into a bird. I so badly wanted to spot their chicken-like forms.

Everyone was slamming on their brakes on a major road and as I crept around the mayhem I saw the reason: a turtle of some kind. Four people emerged from the cars and were practically tripping over one another trying to get to the turtle to carry him to safety. One small act of kindness perhaps, but for the turtle a life-saving one.

Loess bluff with numerous bee-eaters and one Northern Wheatear and, cut into a low grassy ridge, the set of tracks veers right. Two doves on the wire… Here, I would expect them to be European Turtle-Doves , as opposed to Collared Doves , but they are against the light… until a soft turrr – turrr comes from that direction.

The top photo shows a first winter California Gull ( Larus californicus ) on the right and a non-breeding adult on the left. Kutras Lake and Turtle Bay in Redding California are a couple of the best places to find both gulls and shorebirds in the area. On top of that, they occur in breeding and non-breeding plumage!

Besides their piratical nature, they skim the surface of the water and use their strongly hooked bill to grab small fish, squid, baby turtles and in some locations, sea iguanas.
