Note to other species: better do not rely on mature primary forests, as this may lead to extinction. This says more about my inability to differentiate between warbler species than about the rarity of the bird – but the bird was kindly singing. Also, do not smoke as it is not good for your health.

Birding a monastery: Zhaga, Western Sichuan

So, maybe not be the best place to visit for monks suffering from depression. Maybe these people like challenges – at least here at the monastery, getting good shots of this species is quite easy. Another species apparently enjoying the proximity of a monastery is the White-winged Grosbeak.

Its mood is not helped by the ambiguous review on eBird: “Although not actually pale, this brownish songbird is one of the plainer thrushes in its range” The Latin species name of the Dusky Thrush is eunomos (I guess that is Greek, but whatever) – meaning well-ordered.

Redgannet’s repeated attempts to eat stuff that was bigger than his own head brought exasperated warnings from his long-suffering mother. Perch are a fresh water species of fish that are native to Europe and N. As an adult, he still finds fascination in watching birds swallow seemingly impossible mouthfuls.

The Brown Teal

But names aren’t everything and there is plenty to say about this species. The latter two species are flightless, but the Brown Teal is flighted and in the old days used to locally migrate in large numbers to winter roosting areas. Male Brown Teal showing some breeding plumage.
