That’s the Kingfisher at the right; on the left was one of the area’s many European Stonechats. Gee, I hope I got this one right. Oystercatchers are unquestionably cool birds, and, even in North America, a rare treat. This bird may be “common”, but it is also stunning.

Towhees are large, ground-hugging sparrows that occur only in North America. Note the back of the head on my Ejido Triquillo birds: I also felt I had seen a hint of rufous crown on these birds, but the photos didn’t help… until I found one with just the right lighting conditions. Our towhees are weird.

The muted colors of Blackburnians, Black-throated Greens, and Blackpolls fit right in with the dull greens and golden highlights of the early fall vegetation. Bank and Barn Swallows also migrate through in huge numbers, maybe even the majority of the individuals of these common species that breed in North America.

The female isn’t quite so unreal but is still a cool little bird in her own right. Plumaged like various other small female hummingbirds from North America, the lady Snowcap is pale gray below, pale glittering green above, and with a tail that flashes bits of white.

Niagara Falls State Park, right above the cataracts, is where I used to bike to on May days to see dozens of fantastic chestnut Bay-breasted Warblers whispering from the canopy, American Redstarts and Tennessee Warblers and Nashville Warblers filling the woods with song. Birds are arriving in North America, flying from places far to the south. Many come from Central America, a good number fly much further. Other stops revealed more Red-eyed Vireos, additional Scarlet Tanagers, and a few Summer Tanagers but the biggest movements of birds took place right on the coast.

The one migratory species, aptly named the Common Yellowthroat , can be seen almost anywhere in North America. Another one, the Masked Yellowthroat , can be found in five unconnected resident territories over much of South America. I live right in the middle of this species’ range, and have seen it ten times so far.

They are mainly year-round residents of montane coniferous forests of western North America, primarily in areas dominated by pine, spruce-fir, and piñon-juniper. Hat Lake ( see map ) is located right on highway 89 which traverses the park and is home to several cavity rich snags within eye sight of the highway.

The slightly more numerous Snowy Plovers , however, will stay right here; Lago de Cuitzeo is one of the few places where this species breeds in central Mexico. Of all North America’s Plovers that may migrate, only the Snowy and the Killdeer breed this far south. But this Plover is a Snowy, and will stay right here.
