The White-tailed Antelope Squirrel , sometimes referred to as the White-tailed Ground Squirrel or the Antelope Chipmunk , is the rare diurnal mammal in the deserts of the southwestern United States. It didn’t get any food but it was immortalized in photographs which I used to identify it.

I had noted that if you took a quick look around you’d think there were a lot of birds and very few mammals. Of course, a lot of the mammals would be hiding. If cats displace ferrets, then that probably means that birds are getting hit harder than rodents, and among birds, adult birds are getting hit harder than eggs or hatchlings.

The rodent has been dismembered in some way, but it doesn't appear to have been eaten at all. but that's pretty much it for mammals. I have also inspected the vehicle numerous times and found no signs of a rodent infestation or anything living somewhere in the vehicle. The body was a few feet away in the yard.

The Collared Lemming is unique amongst rodents in that it changes colour in the winter to white. Where I live, there are two species of lemmings, the Brown Lemming ( Lemmus trimucronatus ) and the Collared Lemming ( Dicrostonyx groenlandicus ). In Inuktitut they are known as Avinga , which is also one of my son’s names.
