The bird was a little harder to find than I expected; I needed to triangulate the sounds of the call and finally, after standing and looking and walking around the tree where the bird had to be calling from, I took a deep breath, looked again, and there it was right in front of me, actually at eye level. I was the only birder there!

But, then again, this is an artist and photographer who has illustrated and co-written books on sparrows and moths! Antpittas and Gnateaters by Harry F. This bunch of possible Costa Rican crypto birds can be grouped into four main categories: (1). Bird species that require further research. Based on even more recent recordings, it seems that the birds in Costa Rica can probably be placed in the Mangrove Rail group. from Mexico south to Costa Rica.

We also got an extra stop in Dallas, Texas (Hey wasn’t I just here) but again no birds could be added, unless I count the House Sparrow flying around inside the terminal. Most of the time, I know enough about an area, or have done some research into what is found there, that I am pleasantly surprised at best. This nice little group of shorebirds, including a Killdeer, three Long-billed Dowitchers and a Spotted Sandpipers all got together for a photo. A couple of wrens were early morning visitors.

On our last day in Bijagua, we got to see a small group of White-throated Magpie-jays. We ran across this Common Back Hawk right alongside the mangrove swamp.
