John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge , AKA Tinicum, is an outstanding urban oasis in southern Philadelphia, less than one mile from Philadelphia’s airport. The remnant of this once vast tidal marsh is protected by the refuge. This area, administered for the benefit of wildlife and people, was known as Tinicum Wildlife Preserve.

The web site explains best what it’s all about: “Gulls flock together to roost communally on lakes, reservoirs and estuaries, in groups that can reach the thousands. Gathering more detailed information about wintering populations, and which roost sites they rely on, will help us protect them and develop more effective conservation strategies.”

Each family section begins with a Group Account, an overall section giving the number of species in the family and nesting commonalities and differences. The organization varies, and there are sometimes more than one Group Accounts for a family. Sometimes there’s even more than text! This happens a lot in the shorebird sections.

Up to 100 kg – possibly a female, my guide and a bear researcher from the wildlife charity Callisto, Yannis Tsanakis, tells me. Afraid that their ideas for the development of the area, including a ski centre, might be restricted by the nature protection regime, the officials rejected the idea. In the end, have I seen my bear?

On 26 January 2012, my first full day in Florida for the Space Coast Birding and Wildlife Festival, I had a mission for the evening. Johns National Wildlife Refuge which is located on the north side of Route 50 just west of Titusville. I was not amused to hear that the group the next day heard several Black Rails calling.

Thanks mostly to David Lindo, The Urban Birder, there are a few British bird groups touring the country every year now, even the BBC came to film the world famous Long-eared Owl gathering in the town of Kikinda with more than 700 birds in some winters. In some years, Spanish Sparrows were reported breeding inside White Storks nests in Sakule.

Cabanis’s Ground-Sparrow. The name change of a small brown bird, a sparrow, is exciting. Split from birds in northern Central America (the White-faced Ground-Sparrow ), the Cabanis’s becomes a very special bird. To me, this is the most exciting change to the list. Yeah, I did just say that.
