I found the experience of authentically aggressive heat rather refreshing, but much prefer my moderate New York summers! Multiple groups of trogons with young in the United States seems surreal, but is entirely possible in the right place. The real highlight of my weekend, out of many worthy contenders, had to be Elegant Trogon.

The small group was a good counterpart to the large, convivial ABA Safari group of 98 birders. That’s a lot, and the organizers of the safari did an excellent job of creating an environment that offered small group birding during the day and a birders party every night. I am a birder, after all.

While growing up in western New York during the 70s and 80s, sure, we could have found some information, some illustrations of toucans at the local public library. These colorful, exotic birds are often seen moving through forest and second growth in groups of 8 or so individuals in search of fruit, nests, and small creatures.

We practiced using binoculars and field guides, talked about migration and how important New York’s parks are in providing habitat for exhausted birds, I even worked in a plug for keeping cats indoors.

The first was a scheduled walk with the Hong Kong Bird Watching Society that met at the junction of Nam Chung Rd & Luk Keng Rd at the far-flung northeastern edge of the New Territories. We dipped on the latter and only caught sight of a distant group of 7 or so lapwings once we had given up hope. 9 Little Grebe. 11 Great Cormorant.
