As the Red-Shouldered Hawk seen above screamed overhead, Acorn Woodpeckers not only treated themselves to the woodpecker feeder, they had to attack the sunflower feeders as well. Lema Ranch has several ponds and is always a great spot for waterfowl but I was surprised to find four Snow Geese on secluded pond! Fun birding!

Black Woodpeckers are still relatively easy to hear and see. Usually about 40K geese overwinter in Serbia, but the last cold spell, when the Danube was mostly frozen solid, pushed twice as many to Serbia. While Hoopoes and Bee-eaters are common, European Rollers are still highly localised, although the population is recovering.

I know these winds had a lot of the birds all settled in, and not moving much, but right off the bat, I got a new Lifer, in a pair of Nuttall’s Woodpeckers. Down in the water, I added Common Goldeneyes, Common Mergansers, Canada Geese , and yes, don’t laugh…my first Mallards of the year. Here is my new Nuttall’s Woodpecker.

In two months they will depart for valleys, leaving the bare branches bare of birds, too – apart from woodpeckers – but for now they are in the forest. Marsh and Long-tailed Tit joined the list, quickly followed by Nuthatch (heard but not seen), Great Spotted Woodpecker and Jay. A flock of Linnets Next stop was Knettishall Heath again, but this time an area of mature woodland. Treecreeper would have been a bonus, but none were to be seen.

The forests are home to Kalij Pheasants , Crested Tree Swifts , Ashy Wood Swallows , owlets, woodpeckers, spider hunters, barbets and bulbuls, laughingthrushes and hornbills. Commoner species include Bar-headed Geese , parakeets, shrikes, mynas and minivets. The forests are also home to Asiatic Elephants and Capped Langur Monkeys.

A month ago I was in the Iron Gates National Park in eastern Serbia, where one Black Woodpecker flew across the road, right in front of us (proving it is an extant taxon). Birds here included geese, Greater White-fronted and Greylags and, among 25,000 of these, four rare and stunningly handsome Red-breasted Geese.

This cold weather and snow does not seem to have much effect on the huge number of ducks and geese, but the smaller song birds, all seem to wake up much later in the days, and only after it has warmed up a bit. I am still looking for that elusive Hairy Woodpecker, but I did get to add a Red-breasted Sapsucker to the list.

A quick check of the Collins 2 (I think American birders know this book as the “Birds of Europe”, but here, some branding mastermind has interconnected the company’s name and the book title) revealed that we are facing two Siberian Greylag Geese (race rubrirostris ). Greylag Geese in front of Wild Bird Cafe. The islands in view from the Wild Bird Cafe offered fantastic views of the Greylag Geese , Eurasian Teal, Eurasian Wigeon , hundreds of Rock Doves , Common Moorhens and some spectacular views of Common Snipe. Incidentally I don’t have any photographs of Green Woodpeckers !

The best birds so far were two rare geese, Lesser White-fronted and Red-breasted Goose (both my second observations ever), plus Bewick’s Swan and Red-crested Pochard – all in Greece. Lesser Spotted Woodpecker – Dendrocopos minor. Middle Spotted Woodpecker – Dendrocopos medius.

According to eBird, the chronology of my life list includes White-Headed Woodpecker at No. Lifers includes Gambel’s Quail and Neotropic Cormorant, but the real highlights were the morning fly-out of Sandhill Cranes and the evening fly-in of Snow Geese. Thus, my “good birds” are likely the opposite of an eastern birder.

Just imagine how bad the Black-backed Woodpecker picture must be for this to qualify as “nice.” I had nothing to offer so they moved on pretty quickly, but not before I managed to get a decent shot or three.

The local flock of geese (mostly Pink-footed, Swan Goose) is not “countable” while the Egyptian Geese and Ruddy Shelducks that occasionally turn up are. Yes, the Egyptian Geese there are countable. , and the White Storks are also wild and countable despite breeding at the zoo.

The Pantanal hosts a mosaic of forest islands and riverside forest which is home to an interesting assemblage of regional endemics such as Mato Grosso Antbird , White-lored Spinetail , and Pale-crested Woodpecker. Screamers are most closely related to waterfowl such as ducks and geese. Alas, it was over too soon.

The lakes usually have quite a few waterbirds, with Mute Swans and Egyptian Geese , Greylag Geese , and Canada Geese being abundant. Very rarely, Barnacle Geese are also seen feeding on the lawn, probably on passage. At one time I counted over 60 individuals from each goose species from a single spot.

Steve Schellenger managed to spot a pair of Snow Geese dropping into a marsh all the way in Brooklyn on the other side of the Belt Parkway to add another new species to the cumulative list and a Black-and-white Warbler almost crashed into me before buzzing off into the bushes to add another new bird. and Lincoln’s Sparrow.

This 57,331 acre refuge was set aside as a critical wintering location for tens of thousands of Geese, Ducks and Sandhill Cranes. Right in our camp, we found Ladder-backed Woodpeckers. Nearly 30,000 of these acres is set aside as dry wilderness habitat for other birds, animals and other various living creatures.

Here we will actually stop for a full day, as there is a 10,000 acre wetland refuge, which should hold several species of gulls, White-fronted Geese and Black Brant, just to name a few. The Ladder-backed Woodpecker is one of those that has eluded me so far. It has been at least 7 years since seeing them up in the Pacific North West.

While crossing Gramos Mountain in northern Greece, a Dendrocopos woodpecker flew over the road and landed in a pine tree. I had two possibilities, an uncommon Middle Spotted or scarce White-backed Woodpecker – which would have been a lifer for me. One Grey-headed Woodpecker flies across the road – a promising start.

A small group of Canada Geese fly over, and out in front of their formation was a pair of Sandhill Cranes. The area that was adjacent to the Rio Grande River, was packed with old growth elms, and oaks, and was home to several Black-capped Chickadees, White-breasted Nuthatches, Hairy Woodpeckers as well as Downy Woodpeckers.

Looking at the river, I cannot believe my memories of the same place this January – frozen solid, with just a small opening in the ice – and 26,000 geese in it! A heavily camouflaged woodpecker (like an owl or a nightjar), more often heard than seen, and even then, possible to see only when it moves. Alpine Swift – Apus melba.

As we entered the wildlife area we saw hundreds of shorebirds, W hite-faced Ibis , American White Pelican , several species of duck and hundreds of G reater White-fronted Geese. We scoped many birds because the road traversing the wildlife area is elevated above the impoundments allowing the birds to see your vehicle coming from afar.
