Best Bird of the Weekend (Third of July 2021)

I found myself fully immersed in marine species while boating, fishing, and birding coastal Virginia with family this weekend. The best of a bunch of birds I see all too rarely was, quite fittingly, Virginia Rail showing well in a saltmarsh.

Elton’s Egret

But a small colony of them have made an exception for Elton Reed, who has fished off Chincoteague Island, Virginia for almost five decades. He found it in Gay Frazee , a skilled wildlife rehabber who runs Wildlife ER on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. Over time, he learned to recognize individuals.

First Post-COVID-19 Birding Trip: Wisconsin and Horicon NWR

In mid-summer, the refuge is full of breeding birds, including Canada Goose, Mallard, Wood Duck, Blue-winged Teal, Pied-billed Grebe, Virginia Rail, Sandhill Crane, Black Tern, Tree Swallow, Barn Swallow, Yellow Warbler, Common Yellowthroat, etc.

Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) attempts to calculate the economic contribution of National Wildlife Refuge visitation to local communities. Activities such as hunting, fishing, and trapping are categorized as “consumptive” uses. In contrast, consumptive uses were minor: fishing accounted for 10 percent and hunting was just 4 percent.

Imagine my joy, however, as on my walk to the tower a Virginia Rail sauntered past almost within touching distance. Sure, a birder had reported a cooperative Virginia Rail the day before but I didn’t expect lightening to strike twice! The last one were breeders also, at Massapequa Preserve. ). And waited. And waited.
