Most species are so relaxed down here, getting images of birds is like shooting fish in a barrel like the above Tricolored Heron. One young vulture even charged towards the otter as if to sample a bite. Plus otters each fish, which they are going to smell a bit like. It’s so aromatic, it has its own name: spraint.

The species is fairly widespread in the Western Pacific, ranging from New Zealand to Japan, and contrary to its name it isn’t actually a true snapper (family Lutjanidae), but is instead a member of the porgy and sea bream family (Sparidae). In early August this year, I saw 77 species here (69 on the lake, plus 8 more in the surrounding areas) but barely more than a thousand individuals. We hope to find out after post mortem analysis of these samples. Spring (migrants and breeding species) and winter (wintering waterbirds). This year, we had about 65 dead pelicans.

I had assumed that the the prions would turn out to be the Fairy Prion , the common local species which I saw lots of up in Northland over Christmas , but it turned out that while tehre were a few of these the vast majority of the prions wrecked were the more southerly species, the Broad-billed Prion.

There are quite a few raptor species around Skukuza. Most likely, the devil, not god created this species. While some bustards are the largest bird species capable of flight, the Black-bellied Bustard is only mid-sized. African Spoonbills seem unfazed by large reptiles. I guess you just get used to them with time.
