Urban Birding in San Diego

We would walk the Pacific Beach promenade, see Shamu at Sea World (this is before Blackfish, mind you), and sample delicious Mexican food in Old Town San Diego. Riding around Mission Bay and back to the headquarters along the San Diego River can garner us about sixty-five species over the 10-mile bike ride.

Usually, it’s “Bird eating fish” but here we have a case of a “Bird-eating fish.” ” The Wels Catfish, Silurus glanis , is the second largest fish in its range, which covers much of Europe and parts of West Asia. As noted, the fish-like mammals do this as well. pigeons, Columbia livia ).

Grallards: New Zealand’s Next Extinction or Newest Species?

Yes, cute little Skylarks were all well and good, but what Kiwis really wanted were birds they could shoot and fish they could, uh, fish. The obvious choice was the Mallard , that plucky familiar northern hemisphere species that is the father of the even more familiar domesticated duck. Not sure if it is yet.

Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) recently proposed reintroducing California Condors in the Pacific Northwest. One management tool used by FWS is reintroduction of an endangered species into its former range. In other words, an experimental population of an “endangered” species is treated as “threatened,” which has fewer protections.

Summer Birding at Conboy Lake NWR

According to eBird , just over 200 species have been observed at the refuge and just under 1,000 checklists have been submitted. I decided to walk Willard Springs trial , a two-mile loop that provides a nice sample of the various habitats on the refuge , including wet prairie, marsh, meadow, and pine forest.
