Perched high above the river were a number of birds of prey, including the one with the most evocative call of the African bush, the African Fish-eagle. Red Lechwe. There were no mammals, little game, and not many birds either. Secondly, New Zealand had already experienced on wave of extinction due to the introduction or rats and human hunting. Gamebirds, such as turkeys, pheasants, partridges, quail, Mallards and the like were also brought, as were popular sport fish.

There is a breeding pair of White-tailed Eagles at the Veliko Ratno Island and they can be seen year-round, but the best chances are in winter, when they hunt ducks around the island. The only mammal species I have observed here were the Brown Hare and Least Weasel , but Golden Jackals and even Wild Boars are present, too. eBird list.

That for the latter nature went on without them, letting them observe, seems to be proved by the fact that there doesn’t seem to be a big difference in your chance of getting wounded by a small to medium forest mammal if you are hunting them or if you are gathering plant products. Not birds, though.

What put this once small fishing town on the map was not birds but mammals, specifically whales and dolphins. Sperm Whales feed deep, diving to the bottom of the trench, hunting for a while, then rising again to catch a breath. Marine Kaikoura marine mammals New Zealand whales' I always seem to see Kaikoura at dawn.

We were also lucky enough to see a beautiful pair of Sacred Kingfishers hunting along the coastal edge. One is pictured below.

Fish and Wildlife Service. Not only were they a common bird, they were a common bird nearshore; indigenous peoples hunted them up and down the coast. However, they were refound on Buldir Island, a remote island that never had any introduced mammals.

Now that the colony is off limits for hunting, the population has grown and the village is benefitting tremendously from entry and guide fees, and a school is being built courtesy of conservation funds. The rare Rufous Fishing Owl was one of the many species seen by the group here.

The answer should be obvious to anyone familiar with wildfowl hunting in the US and the film Jerry McGuire – money. If you want to have the “thrill” of shooting a wild lion (not a canned hunt), well, you’re going to need a lot of land to sustain those lions. Managing areas for hunting does exactly that.

This fish hunting duck ranges from the northern tip of New Zealand to the sub-Antarctic Auckland Islands (after which it was first named) but is common nowhere. There aren’t many mammal ticks on this trip, but the ones you get are pretty remarkable. It certainly has no known relatives. Laughing Owl.

As the name suggests, the National Bison Range is mostly known for its large mammals. And although the single Bald Eagle we spotted just outside the park was probably more interested in fish, they are known to enjoy fawn as well, when they can carry it.
