On a recent visit I threw my bags in the hotel room and went straight there, and got over 60 species of birds in a few hours and fantastic views of Nilgai , the largest antelope in India. Commoner species include Bar-headed Geese , parakeets, shrikes, mynas and minivets. You should also see Gharial and Mugger Crocodiles there.

Ubiquitous Egyptian Geese dabbled in the shallows while a diminutive Squacco Heron stood motionless in some tangled vegetation over the water. The dam provided me with several new birds, including Green Pygmy-geese, Bar-breasted Honeyeaters, Wandering Whistling Ducks, Intermediate Herons, Pied Herons, Comb-crested Jacanas, Forest Kingfishers, Black-faced Cuckoo-shrike , and the afore mentioned Rufus-banded Honeyeater. The male of the species has the upper portion of the head, back of neck, back and wings all glossy black. The male is the only Black-necked Stilt in the second segment of this video, along with several Greater White-fronted Geese, and the third bird that comes into view in the final segment that is larger than the other two birds.

Now that Fish Crows ( Corvus ossifragus ) have established themselves as year-round residents of the Hudson Valley, we get a little more corvid variety, but even they ceased to qualify as rare birds some time ago. Even without being on the water it was possible watch birds across the river, as evidenced by my lifer pair of African Pygmy Geese , which flew down the river and landed on the Namibian side. Located about 20 miles from Lakeview, Oregon, and sitting at an elevation of 5100 feet, this 208 acre lake is home to many species of fish, including Largemouth Bass, Crappie and Bluegill. I had assumed that the the prions would turn out to be the Fairy Prion , the common local species which I saw lots of up in Northland over Christmas , but it turned out that while tehre were a few of these the vast majority of the prions wrecked were the more southerly species, the Broad-billed Prion.

She lived on a stretch of the Mississippi River near a power plant that keeps the river open all winter long (even when it’s below zero). Another example would be the Eagle Lady in Alaska.

They have been recording bird species numbers and banding/ringing birds for many years with the initial roll call of bird species starting in 1938. A Little Grebe spent much of the time feeding in front of the hide and it wasn’t until I looked at the photos afterwards that I realised I had captured it eating a small fish!
