The third weekend of January, I travelled to the coastal city of Acapulco to give a seminar on family finances at a church there. And my one lifer for the trip was a family of Rufous-naped Wrens that apparently live in the same garden. But this Bare-necked Tiger-Heron was a real treat for me.

This is especially true for my toddler son, who will rush there past the elephant enclosure and without giving the tigers as much as a casual glance. He doesn’t go there for the ducks, but for the fish.

That is unfortunate because the Tiger Warbler * is one wood-warbler worth watching. The binomial Dendorica tigrina translates into Tiger Warbler which is reflected in the common name in Spanish ( Reinita Tigrina ), French ( Paruline tigrée ), German ( Tigerwaldsänger ) and other languages.

Some other members of the shrike family were a bit less testosterone-driven at Nanhui – like this Bull-headed Shrike … … this rather attractive-looking Tiger Shrike … … or one of the many Brown Shrikes passing through Nanhui on migration. A happier shrike.

Now we were in Finca Tres Equis, a family cocoa farm (if I understood well, it translates as Triple X Farm) and a private reserve of over 300 hectares, of which more than 70 percent is a forest, representing part of a Jaguar corridor. At least one Boat-billed Heron awaited us in the thickets.

They are members of the Parulidae family and Horneros are members of the Furnariidae family, a nice example of parallel evolution. Owned and run by a local family, they treated us very well, even making sure that we had coffee by 4:30 in the morning. Despite part of it being chomped by cattle, we still managed a juvenile Rufescent Tiger-Heron , an excellent find for Costa Rica!

The Journal of the Bombay Natural History Society is not particularly sensitive to the feelings of kingfishers, calling them a “stockily built birds” The Black-capped Kingfisher is among the more attractive ones, which is not an easy feat among this bird family. Other wildlife includes Asian Elephant , Tiger , Leopard. Other countries still have to reach the 300 birds threshold. The best season is March to August.
