Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve: the Tiger Afternoon

A winding track through dense woodlands takes us to the Telia Lake in the southeast of the Tadoba Tiger Reserve in Maharashtra. Our guide explains that it was discovered by tiger cubs and taken off to play with, hence the claw and tooth marks. All of a sudden, in a hushed voice he says one word only: “Tigers!”

Birding Shanghai in May 2023 – Part 1

While having somebody else raise your chicks like an attractive strategy to me, it is not without dangers. The rather elegant-looking Tiger Shrike also mostly feeds on insects but was not kind enough to let me take a video or photo of this (the species thinks that such recordings may result in a negative public image).

Now we were in Finca Tres Equis, a family cocoa farm (if I understood well, it translates as Triple X Farm) and a private reserve of over 300 hectares, of which more than 70 percent is a forest, representing part of a Jaguar corridor. At least one Boat-billed Heron awaited us in the thickets. A group (maybe 4-5 ex.)

Gang-gang Cockatoos-a Christmas wish!

The grass and other vegetation had been slashed recently, which was a relief after yet another Tiger Snake encounter this past week whilst walking alone. Whilst observing the Southern Emu-wrens a White-fronted Chat flew into view and landed on some raised vegetation! A little “Christmas wish” too-Gang-gangs please!

Of course, it is quite common for human parents to set fire to their family homes in order to keep the adult children from moving back home, but this is not an issue for drongos. In Singapore, a Tiger Shrike was observed casting a pellet after eating a large scarab beetle.

An afternoon in the Madikwe Game Reserve, South Africa

Mosethla Bush Camp guide awaits us by the open Land Rover and with a loaded rifle in front of the steering wheel, we continue into the bush (oddly, while observing lions and tigers in India, not a single rifle was in sight). A little further, there’s a family group of Savannah Elephants with two two-year olds. Sniffing us.
