Last week, we quite impulsively jumped in a rental car and drove 2600 miles round trip to south Texas to pick up 34 new species. If we could get there, all other expenses were covered.

Fortunately, two species of Mergansers sometimes stray to Cuba, and so my friend suggested, correctly, that ours was a female Hooded Merganser. My best bird of the year is based on the sighting rather than the species. Hunting sandhill cranes in Kentucky is a bad idea from a public relations standpoint, considering the growing cadre of birders and nature enthusiasts for whom cranes are a touchstone species. Initiating a hunting season on a large, charismatic species like a crane is no way to resuscitate hunting.

The Arenal forests are very good for this species. The fact that one or two families of nunbirds still occur at Luna Nueva is testament to the quality of the rainforest at this site. 140 other species : Despite the lack of a dawn chorus and rained out nocturnal birding, we still managed to identify 140 plus species.
