The one bird I did not see here, however, was the Bateleur Eagle … One highlight in the area is the Saddle-billed Stork , likely to be the tallest species in the stork family. Another member of the stork family, the African Openbill , looks like it is could benefit from a good orthodontist. And sadly, it is listed as Endangered.

The stoats, weasels, rats and the like, are unable to kill the big guys but can make short work of the chicks. Interestingly, however, the chicks, while hatched at the centre, were not bred there. A little further, there’s a family group of Savannah Elephants with two two-year olds. They raise their trunks, sniffing the air. The dirt road winds in between rocky outcrops – kopjes, by Burchell’s Zebras and Greater Kudus. Nowadays, the Savannah Elephants are shorter and with smaller tusks, often without them. Sniffing us.

These were not easy journeys, and we can only guess how much time was spent making contacts and raising funds to go to the ends of the earth or the middle of nowhere, where the penguins live. I have written about the interesting sex life of these jacanas a few times already (short version: female mates with male, lays a bunch of eggs for him to incubate and raise the chicks, leaves him, finds another male, repeat). Once I am moderately successful, I often find such photos quite pleasing. One puzzle solved. I can see their point.
