Zebra Doves , Tree Sparrows , Pacific Swallows , Pink-necked Pigeons , Yellow-vented Bulbuls , Asian Koel , Spotted Dove , Rock Dove , Red Junglefowl , Oriental White Eyes and Black-naped Orioles were soon on our list. On one occasion we saw a pair of Red Turtle Doves beside the fishing lake. Black-naped Oriole. Common Sandpiper.

This first birding vignette is actually from just before the weekend, when I was at Alley Pond Park on a day that I was miraculously released from work a tiny bit early and was hoping to find a Yellow-throated Warbler but settled for a Swamp Sparrow by Little Alley Pond. At the same location a Chipping Sparrow also cooperated for pictures.

People ascribe near mythic status to the members of the family Delphinidae (and other related families). A mixed species flock of sparrows (american tree, field and chipping) was by the bike track parking lot. Also present in other parts of the park were fox and white-throated sparrows.

I briefly entertained the idea that I had found a rare species never before seen in New York but quickly came to my senses and realized that I was dealing with a leucistic individual. Sometimes, I’ll reply with a story about the sparrows found in a local grasslands preserve. Families do not hike up mountains to sit all day on pointy rocks to watch woodpeckers.
