This cold weather and snow does not seem to have much effect on the huge number of ducks and geese, but the smaller song birds, all seem to wake up much later in the days, and only after it has warmed up a bit. Northern Harriers, Peregrine Falcons, American Kestrels, and a fair number of Bald Eagles all can be found on the refuge year round.

Greylag Geese. Soon I hit the brakes for a 60 strong flock of Greylag Geese of the Siberian race rubrirostris grazing near the road. The best bird was one lovely Common Chiffchaff that was very hard to locate in the thick crown of an old juniper tree, followed by one mysterious small falcon. eBird hotspots of Prespa lakes.

There were Plumed Whistling-Ducks , Radjah Shelducks with ducklings, Common Sandpipers , Wood Sandpipers, Pied Herons, Glossy Ibis, Black-winged Stilt and Magpie Geese. A Black Falcon was perched in the top of a tree as we circumnavigated the ponds and Peaceful and Diamond Doves flew in over the fence for water.

The park even features a Welcome Back Waterfowl day when the community is encouraged to come out and learn about the ducks, geese, and swans that visit the valley – an event that usually occurs in early April but this year took place on March 24. The best birds so far were two rare geese, Lesser White-fronted and Red-breasted Goose (both my second observations ever), plus Bewick’s Swan and Red-crested Pochard – all in Greece. But I had hoped to see what may be around, holding out hope that an early Peregrine Falcon would be staking out an aerie in the cliffs. The lakes usually have quite a few waterbirds, with Mute Swans and Egyptian Geese , Greylag Geese , and Canada Geese being abundant. Very rarely, Barnacle Geese are also seen feeding on the lawn, probably on passage. At one time I counted over 60 individuals from each goose species from a single spot.

The bar was covered with shorebirds, gulls, geese, and cormorants. After a host of other birders arrived and everyone was enjoying good looks at Lisa’s American Golden-Plover a pigeon flew over the shorebirds and they must have mistaken it for a falcon because they all took wing as one before circling back to the bar.

A quick check of the Collins 2 (I think American birders know this book as the “Birds of Europe”, but here, some branding mastermind has interconnected the company’s name and the book title) revealed that we are facing two Siberian Greylag Geese (race rubrirostris ). Scan of the ridge reveals a distant but definitive Peregrine Falcon.

Aleutian Cackling Geese are another bird very familiar with the Pacific; they are the only species of goose that nest on Alaska’s remote Aleutian Islands. is on a boat in the Aleutian chain. You have to look carefully, because often there are Australasian Grebes and Green Pygmy-Geese amongst the ducks and lilies. The Magpie Geese have been known to breed in the area and sometimes you will observe them amongst the lilies, but sometimes they are perched in the trees at the end of the wetland. As I mentioned before, Freezeout means Snow Geese , and lots of them. But like any aspect of migration, the lots-of-Snow-Geese phenomenon is ephemeral and to some degree unpredictable, occuring earlier one year, later the next, and then gone as the geese head north to make more geese or south to wait out the winter.

There was just enough light to see a Peregrine Falcon swoop down thru the parking lot here at Marina Palmira. This Peregrine Falcon has been hanging around the tidal flats chasing the various shorebirds. Misses: Wilson Phalarope, Greater White-fronted Geese. Here is her description of migrating Snow Geese: I’d seen snow geese at great distances offshore or far overhead, but here they are passing me by, low on the water, where the wind speed is lessened. There are Australasian Grebes, Wandering Whistling-Ducks, Pacific Black Ducks and Little Black Cormorants present and also Magpie Geese. Magpie Geese are not always present in the Broome area, but this year good numbers came and they also bred in this area to the south of Broome.

Looking at the river, I cannot believe my memories of the same place this January – frozen solid, with just a small opening in the ice – and 26,000 geese in it! Or a falcon? Not a falcon, but a female Eurasian Sparrowhawk , drying its soaked feathers after the rain that was falling while we were protected by the trees.

We also passed Golden and Bald Eagles , a few hardy Red-tailed Hawks , and what we thought was probably a Peregrine Falcon although (or because) it zipped by fast. A cruise by the shore revealed some Canada Geese , Common Goldeneye , and Bufflehead. A mountain range slipped away beneath us.

Scotts Bluff birders found nine species, including Townsend’s Solitaire , Black-billed Magpie , Prairie Falcon , and count week Gray-crowned Rosy-finches. Birders at Vicksburg counted 45 species, including Snow Geese , Barred Owl , Brown Thrasher , 152 Yellow-rumped Warblers , Fish Crow , and Eastern Towhee.

Scanning the bay side as Laughing Gulls streamed west by the hundreds netted us three Black Skimmers , our only sighting for the day, and Canada Geese , Brant , and Double-crested Cormorants were picked up in flocks. Matthieu and Steve enjoy a nice moment of bright sunshine as we kept cranking up the numbers as the day went on.

And there they were, Cape Barren Geese , an absolutely enormous species of goose that’s endemic to the southern coast of Australia. There’s an interesting theory that they are a relic of a time when large geese would have fed on the vast grassy plains of Antarctica, before that continent froze. Still the birds came.
