First birds came in the form of migrants and resident species that live in an oasis of precious green space near home. 2022 gave me a fair share of wonderful birds and birding experiences. Those kept me below the 700 species threshhold but I won’t complain about 691 species. 48 Hummingbird Species.

Why Do I Keep a Neighborhood Bird List?

Each time, a small notebook tagged along with me, and I would note the bird species I spotted, then put it away. I can go back in my notebook to see when other species arrive, or which spend all year in my Florida region. “It I notice more.”. Notetaking as a way to hone focus is common among birders and and naturalists in general.

Not enough Woodpeckers

Or would be, had I encountered more of them – so far, I have seen only a very small share of the approximately 233 woodpecker species, and got decent photos of an even smaller number – not much more than 10% of all of them. So, writing a post about them is easy.

Accessibility Matters

I do not (yet) have any accessibility issues, and my only experience regarding anything akin to accessibility has been limited to the period when my daughter was in a stroller, which presents only a tiny sliver of the challenges faced by many. Some access issues are addressed by federal law.

Best Bird of the Weekend (Second of May 2015)

Corey saw 115 species of bird on Saturday alone so he had lots of to choose from in picking his Best Bird of the Weekend. My own take was much more modest, but I managed to find a few fancy warblers in Cobbs Hill Park for my mother-in-law, foremost among them the dazzling Blackburnian Warbler. Are new migrants flooding your area?

Best Bird of the Weekend (Second of May 2017)

Global Big Day 2017 is in the books, with 15,954 participants submitting 40,698 checklists to eBird accounting for 6,068 species … so far. The rapid u-turn and speeding back to Shane’s position probably broke several laws but Corey didn’t care: he got his shearwater! What a weekend for birders all over the world.

The Wildlife Rehabilitator’s Wish List

Change in Law. I wish for a federal law prohibiting domestic and feral cats from roaming free outdoors. Violation of the law would be punishable by substantial fines, plus the cat owners would be required to perform community service at a local wildlife rehabilitation facility. “I’d That’s easy!” wrote Veronica in California.
