Mammals of South Asia (Lynx Edicions)

Ahead of the first trip, I wasn’t thinking much about mammals, and yet, you cannot miss them, from Nilgais near villages to Indian Flying Foxes in town centres, not to mention those ubiquitous and irresistibly cute Palm Squirrels eating seeds left for parakeets. On that first trip, I even saw some of the last 500 (Asiatic) Lions !

It was an exciting experience, though a remarkably chilly one, as winters in Castile and León can be very cold. Only in Africa is it really easy to see a big variety.

By the time this post publishes, I’ll be on an airplane heading back to the United States following a truly remarkable two week visit to Uganda as part of a group of western birders visiting there to promote the inaugural African Birding Expo. In the relatively brief period, my group had something on the order of 450 species.

Winter Wanderland

Large groups of Hooded Merganser , Redhead , Franklin’s Gull , and other floaters were easily spotted. We also saw Prairie Dogs , Bison , Mule Deer , Abert’s Squirrel and Coyote. Late summer 2023 the lakes and ponds had been empty, presumably because the ducks and geese were moulting. We stopped at Rosie’s Diner.

My first experience birding was as a teenager back in the 70s, when birding meant a pair of binoculars, a couple of bird feeders, and a smallish field guide (book). A gorgeous Squirrel Cuckoo blows my mind. … to where I once belonged. I realize I’m not in Kansas (well, California) anymore.

A Brief Return to Trinidad

There were numerous White-chested Emeralds around at the feeders also – a vivid Yellow Oriole hopped around a bit further off, and restless movement in the treetops further still was a Squirrel Cuckoo. We had a small group of three or four repeatedly calling and posturing as they moved through the canopy. American Flamingo.
