Best Bird of the Weekend (Third of April 2021)

NASA Suspends Radiation Experiments

For more than a year, we have worked to block NASA’s planned radiation experiments on live squirrel monkeys. We have just learned that the experiments have been cancelled. NASA had planned to irradiate 30 live squirrel monkeys in a misguided attempt to learn the effects of deep-space radiation. Excellent news!

Only a couple articles back I described the experience of a morning’s birding along this road. The call of a Squirrel Cuckoo got me searching in the highest branches of some large trees nearby. However, paying attention to the Squirrel Cuckoo made me aware of a couple tiny birds moving around in the canopy.

NASA Funds Radiation Experiments on Monkeys

Another animal experiment I would not support as a US taxpayer. In Bergman's study, according to Discovery News, 18 to 28 squirrel monkeys would be subjected to radiation and periodically tested to gauge how exposure affects performance in a variety of learned tasks.

It was an exciting experience, though a remarkably chilly one, as winters in Castile and León can be very cold. I’ve yet to see an English pine marten, but I once watched one hunting red squirrels in the Bialowieza Forest in Poland. My only wolf sightings have been in Spain, in December, and at great range.

Best Bird of the Weekend (Last of November 2016)

My core values demand that I get outside often enough to experience the real world, rather than what I see while watching football. While out in my neighborhood, I saw what I believe was a Sharp-shinned Hawk take a pass at one of Rochester’s exotic white squirrels , which turn up this time of year like clockwork.
