It was an exciting experience, though a remarkably chilly one, as winters in Castile and León can be very cold. This northern fox really does look red, unlike the pale, sandy-coloured animals I saw in Georgia in 2019 ( below ). My only wolf sightings have been in Spain, in December, and at great range.

My daughter and I waited past dusk to see a Great Horned Owl land in the bare tree pictured above. It perched on the cell tower instead.

The week before I had tried to walk this trail with my parents and son in the baby jogger, but the constant need to veer off the pathway to avoid those less observant of CDC guidance made the experience more stressful than enjoyable. I also spent a week in northwestern Costa Rica on a family vacation, a long weekend in Barbados, a week in Georgia, and two week-plus-long trips to visit relatives in southern California.
