I’ll still probably try again next June, as this June has been the driest and hottest in memory, and in my experience, summer rains make it much more likely that one will see the Sinaloa Martin. The other options are to continue flying past daybreak, which is dangerous both because you are low on energy and because hawks and falcons might come after you. Hordes of House Sparrows and Rock Pigeons are more than willing to push you around rather then let you have that choice morsel you just found. Pretty nice!

This is where Gila Woodpecker and Yellow-breasted Chat meet Squirrel Cuckoo , Bat Falcon , and Black-throated Magpie-Jay. As the sun began to set, a flock of Mexican Parrotlets alighted in a tree with brilliant red bark, and we all noticed a Bat Falcon watching silently from a high perch above all the action down below.

We had persevered through four years at the top of Battery Harris Platform and could bring our experience to bear on the task of trying to record as many species as possible on a single day from that single spot. We were running low on birds we thought possible with House Sparrow and Downy Woodpecker being two of the easiest left.

Day-trips to the Dry Tortugas are of course possible but the best way to experience the islands is on an extended 3-day guided tour. I thought it would be interesting to look at selections of the Stokes’ description of the falcon, which is listed in both guides: Shape in Flight: Very large, heavy-bodied, broad-necked falcon, tail very broad and moderately long, wings fairly long and broad-based for a falcon; outer wings taper to blunt tip.
