Not because you generally see many birds while diving, although the experience of seeing shearwaters flying underwater while cage diving, as I once did, was one I think most birders would enjoy. I can hardly begin to describe the surreal experience that unfolded before me. It is truly a magical place, an experience like none other. Still, there are plenty of other birds and animals to see along the way, including Glaucous and other gulls, geese, herds of sheep and Icelandic horses. Patience, thus, is key.

In my experience, I’ve noted how birders, particularly newer birders, can have a tendency to jump to conclusions when they see any sort of bird that doesn’t match up perfectly with the picture in the field guide. The horse flies were also out in full force, and we scurried down the hot trail and back to the car in our efforts to escape. Fair parts of the property were used to cultivate different crops, some areas were pasture for cows and horses, and other areas were covered in forest that was meant to be logged, selectively or otherwise. Barbaro, the magnificent thoroughbred who broke his leg two weeks after winning the 2006 Kentucky Derby (I watched both races live), was put to death after taking a turn for the worse in his recovery.
