I am reminded of the ducks’ perilous and arduous existence on each family outing to Heidelberg Zoo. This is especially true for my toddler son, who will rush there past the elephant enclosure and without giving the tigers as much as a casual glance. He doesn’t go there for the ducks, but for the fish.

The two star attractions for most tourists are Asian Elephants and Bornean Orangutans. I dipped on the elephants, but the river certainly delivered for orangutans. The river is a stronghold of the endangered Storm’s Stork , a stunning member of the family, and I saw at least one every day I was there. A side tributary.

Nosey the African elephant is with Liebling Family circus in Florida, right now they are in Mount Dora, this outfit violates animal welfare regulations on a regular basis. A little further, there’s a family group of Savannah Elephants with two two-year olds. This game reserve has 900 elephants – the second largest population in South Africa, after the Kruger National Park with 13,000. Nowadays, the Savannah Elephants are shorter and with smaller tusks, often without them.

A slightly more surprising threat for the vultures comes from elephants. Elephants destroy the trees the vultures live and nest in. Vultures, therefore, tend not to nest in areas with high elephant populations ( source ). Maybe the bird thinks this will drive the elephants away?

The boys knew what Owls looked like, they saw Screech Owls (and Barred and Great Horned Owls) at a local wildlife park, and we photographed Burrowing Owl families every year at Brian Piccolo Park. Kaziranga National Park is famous for having 80% of the surviving population of the Indian Rhinoceros , as well as being the favourite park of the British royal family, whenever they visit India. The one bird I did not see here, however, was the Bateleur Eagle … One highlight in the area is the Saddle-billed Stork , likely to be the tallest species in the stork family. Another member of the stork family, the African Openbill , looks like it is could benefit from a good orthodontist. And sadly, it is listed as Endangered.

For some reason, the largest member of the heron family is not called the Great Heron nor the Giant Heron but rather the Goliath Heron. Madikwe has perhaps too many elephants. A Shaft-tailed Whydah, a member of a small African family of cuckoo-finches.

We got good looks at Yellow-breasted , Crimson-breasted , Yellow-vented , and Orange-bellied Flowerpeckers along with more mundane representatives of the sunbird family, Plain Sunbird and Thick-billed Spiderhunter. And though I didn’t see an elephant, they lurk in Panti… this is an elephant fence protecting a palm plantation.
