Fantastic Birds and Where to Find Them in Serbia

10,000 Birds

The weather has already improved, and in 23 days the spring will be back. With longer and warmer days, we feel the urge to bird in the country, away from our local city patches. So, if you were coming into my neck of the woods – Belgrade, where would I suggest you go birding? Forest From magnificent cliffs to deep and damp beech forests, Resava Gorge Reserve is a nature lover’s perfect getaway.

Frontiers in Costa Rica Birding

10,000 Birds

Costa Rica has long been one of the more frequently visited global birding hotspots. Stable, easy to visit, and with lots of accessible habitats, its easy to see why many birders have opted to visit Costa Rica on several occasions. In addition to providing many people with wonderful life experiences, these birding visits have helped increase our understanding of local bird distribution.

Birding the Danzhou Bay area (Hainan, China) by night

10,000 Birds

Julius Caesar apparently once said “I love treason but hate a traitor” My feelings with regard to a birding-related topic are similar – I love owls but hate owling. For some reason, it seems that getting older means liking the daytime more and nighttime less (at least in my case). Obviously, for watching owls, this is a problem. At Danzhou Bay on Hainan, there are several nocturnal owls that are worth seeing.

The rain flooded Roebuck Plains

10,000 Birds

Last week I mentioned that we had an incredible 564mm over 48 hours here in Broome. It often rains a lot more out of town and with the exceptional rainfall recently we expected the one and only highway out of town to be flooded in both directions. It often floods across Roebuck Plains when we have good rainfall and so that is where we headed on Sunday.

Playing with the Pros

10,000 Birds

Every year, Ducks Unlimited of Mexico, A.C. (DUMAC) surveys the populations of waterfowl and shorebirds in a good number of major wetlands here in Mexico. This year, they decided to do their annual survey if Lake Cuitzeo, half an hour north of Morelia, on a Monday. Since I go birding every Monday, I decided that perhaps it was a sign, and asked if I could participate.

Exploring eBird Mobile Tracks

10,000 Birds

eBirders who enter checklists via the app automatically create an eBird Mobile Track that is attached to the checklist, though it is apparently only visible to the checklist submitter. The track appears in the upper left corner of the online checklist, and it has intrigued me since it started appearing. I recently birded the Tualatin River NWR near Portland, Oregon, and made that my test case for a deeper dive into the Mobile Track.

Would You Move to Another Country… for the Birds?

10,000 Birds

Last week, I received an email from an American couple that has recently moved to Morelia; they found me right here on 10,000 Birds. (Fame suits me, I must humbly admit.) Although birding is not their first reason for moving here, they are enjoying meeting the lovely locals, such as the Broad-billed Hummingbird and Vermilion Flycatchers. I warned them that, impossible as it may seem, they will someday tire of seeing both here.

Red-throated Loon off the Coast of Maine

10,000 Birds

“That loon looks weird,” I remarked to my mom. It certainly wasn’t the most eloquent phrase to ever fall from my lips, but it was true from my reference point. I exclusively see Common Loons , both in Maine – where I spent the holidays and into January – and at my home base in Florida. At first glance, the silhouette looked right for a loon, but something was…off.

The rain made it to Broome!

10,000 Birds

A couple of weeks ago I mentioned how we were all watching and waiting for our much needed wet season rain. The average annual rainfall for Broome is around 500mm and we receive that rainfall over a few months in the summer, which is right now. Last year we only received 338mm for the whole year, so we were hoping for a good bit of rain sooner or later.

Off The Beaten Path

10,000 Birds

One of the most regularly traversed roads for the purpose of birding on the island of Trinidad is the Arima-Blanchisseuse Road. With the most extensive altitude profile of any roadway in the country, one can drive from sea level to a modest 600m through lush tropical rainforest the entire way. Most folks who have come here for birding have stayed at the Asa Wright Nature Centre (likely reopening later this year – but more on that to come) which is located along this picturesque road.

Guide to the Birds of China

10,000 Birds

To say that an update of John MacKinnon’s “A Field Guide to the Birds of China” (2000) has been highly anticipated by birders interested in Chinese birds is almost an understatement. While there are some decent Chinese-language guides, they are of limited use for (local) illiterates like me. The 2000 MacKinnon guide is showing its age while my preferred choice for the Shanghai area, Mark Brazil’s “Birds of East Asia”, covers non-Chinese locations such as Japan

Birding the Danzhou Bay area (Hainan, China) by day

10,000 Birds

The Spring Festival – or Chinese New Year – is a big period for traveling in China. While not on the scale of bird migration, it is routinely and somewhat lazily described as the biggest annual migration of humans in the world. Being somewhat allergic to crowds, I usually avoid traveling during the peak of this period. Instead, I took a birding trip to Hainan ending a few days before the actual Chinese New Year – again with Alpinebirding, despite the lack of anything even remot

Island Swap

10,000 Birds

Two Fridays ago, my wife and I packed most of our stuff into a couple vehicles and boarded the inter-island ferry to Tobago. Having been marooned on Trinidad for the last two years, my body was aching for a change. Pre-pandemic, we’d routinely be in Tobago – birding, guiding, and generally having a blast on the smaller island. This time, the shift happens to be of a slightly longer-term nature, I’m typing this from my new home-office at a place I’ve written about before.

Turtles of the World: A Guide To Every Family–A Book Review by a Turtle Lover

10,000 Birds

Turtles are the reptile everybody loves. At the very least appreciated for their hard-shell adaptation, the way they quietly survive in ponds, rivers, oceans, islands, forests, even, for a few species, deserts, and, if you are of a certain age, their cultural depiction as ninja warriors. Birders are always happy to see a turtle or tortoise, and there are times of the year when my social media feeds are sprinkled with photos of turtles beings removed from roads or crawling to land to lay eggs.

Does Choco Screech-Owl Occur in Costa Rica?

10,000 Birds

Screech-owls don’t actually screech. It’s true and yet that was the name they were given. I suppose that sounds better than “tremulous”, “modulating”, or “little hooting” owls even if any of those names would be more accurate. In any case, screech-owls are birds of the Megascops genus, small nocturnal owls found in wooded habitats from southern Alaska to northern Argentina.

In my never-ending quest to expand my year list, Monday the 24th took me to the area of La Escalera/El Palmar/Arúmbaro. This is my best place to pick up species that inhabit, or visit, the border between the Hot Country thorn forest and highland pine-oak forest habitats. Roebuck Plains in flood

10,000 Birds

Over the last few weeks we have had some significant rainfall in the Broome area. It didn’t take too long after the big rain event at the end of January for Roebuck Plains to flood and the birds to arrive. The highway out of Broome towards Derby has also become great for bird-watching. Most of our rain comes in the late afternoon, so we were out in the middle of the day last Sunday to observe the birdlife across Roebuck Plains.

What’s Up with the ABA?  Part III (Finances)

10,000 Birds

I have recently written about the American Birding Association, as it is currently searching for a new president. As indicated in a prior post , the ABA is in debt and has routinely run annual operating deficits. Since that post, the ABA has updated the financial disclosures page on its website, so there is new information. Additionally, I was curious how the ABA arrived at its precarious financial position, so I did some historical research and decided to share the results.

Flooded land beyond Broome

Having received so much rain recently in Broome we were keen to see what had happened to the parched dry land out of town in recent weeks. Last week I showed you what the highway looked like heading across Roebuck Plains. Last Sunday we drove out to the Roebuck Roadhouse and then travelled towards Derby to see what that land looked like. As we had expected it was very green rather than parched and the Boab trees are now covered in leaves and are hardly recognisable.

Birding Shanghai in January 2022
