Owls, Owls, and more Owls in SE Arizona

The last couple of weeks have really been a boom for me personally, as far as spotting our local owls goes. It all started in getting to photograph the Northern Pygmy-owls in Madera Canyon. Then a quick check up on the Ferruginous Pygmy-owls that are out in Alta Valley.

Cemetery Owls

Last winter, a pair of Great Horned Owls took up residence in a spiny locust (?) Photographers would stand directly beneath the nest, causing the owls a bit of anxiety. This owl just happened to be sitting very low and very close last week. For an owl, that’s a very low nest. Little wonder the owls chose it.

And they never do explain why a Harris’s Hawk in the Hudson Valley doesn’t bring a horde of birdwatchers flooding in to further complicate the supernatural shenanigans (although if they dismissed it as a falconry bird based on its behavior, they were quite right.). Owls at 70 MPH

Just the occasional glance to the left or right to see if I can spot something new. You see, after 17 years living and traveling full time on our 40′ Sailboat “Eagle” we have decided it was time for a change. They turned out to be juvenile Great Horned Owls , one of which was hiding on the nest until I showed up.

Fantastic Birds and Where to Find Them in Serbia

Raptors to look for in this reserve are Golden Eagle and Short-toed Snake Eagle , European Honey-buzzard and Peregrine Falcon. The commonest owls are Eurasian Scops Owl and Tawny Owl , while rare ones include Ural Owl and Eurasian Eagle Owl. About 120 species have been recorded so far.

I screamed: Ural Owl!

all the time pointing with my right hand while holding the steering wheel with my left, and the hardest thing, keeping my eyes on the road. managed to see it, his largest owl ever. How I managed to ID the Ural Owl so easily with such a short observation window, beats me. Greater Spotted Eagle – Clanga clanga.
