The bird foraged on fruit in the upper understory, moving the vegetation almost as much as a monkey does. Three days, three hawk-eagles. During a memorable guiding trip in June, we hit the jackpot with all three species of hawk-eagles in just a few days. In a year of megas, this was one of the top birds for sure.

We saw a number of these distinctive raptors, along with Crested Serpent Eagles and Oriental or Crested Honey Buzzards. If you can parse the subtle differences in his photo below, you’ll see the bird on the left is a dark morph Oriental Honey Buzzard, but the bird on the right is a pale morph Changeable Hawk-Eagle.

To complete the scene the African Fish Eagle ( Haliaeetus vocifer ) was circling above us, yelping a triumphant high-pitched ‘Kyowkow- kow!’. ‘By Tree crowns were swaying, branches rocking; a troop of Vervet Monkeys ( Cercopithecus aethiops ) was on the move and we were reaching for our binoculars. The area is known for more than 600 bird species, of which 472 were eBirded by now: Cinereous Vulture , Pallas’s and Lesser Fish Eagles , Ibisbill , Wallcreeper , etc. Other wildlife includes Phayre’s Leaf Monkey. Other wildlife includes Asian Elephant , Tiger , Leopard. The best season is from December to March.

Lead Feather was such an enjoyable cold-weather pint that I almost didn’t notice the Half Acre logo hidden on the back of the can, which is also avian-inspired, in a way: it features the unmistakable monkey-face of a Barn Owl head… but with tentacled octopus arms sprouting out from underneath.

Wallace’s Hawk Eagle was a lifer. Can’t do a post on Kinabatangan without the amazing Bornean endemic Probosis Monkey. At nighttime this allowed some impromptu spotlighting, and we found many spiders, insects, bats as well as a Lesser Mousedeer and a sleeping Malaysian Flycatcher. A side tributary.

In the first full day, we have seen dozens each of giraffes, zebra, warthogs, elephants, 12 rhinos, 30 hippos, 3 Cape Buffalo, crocodiles, jackals, monkeys, baboons, literally a thousand impala, and at least 10 different antelope type animals. The African Fish Eagle was a great first day bird.

The local Bald Eagles are getting busy, I suspect there is an egg in the nest. The zoo has already identified several species like the huge monkey-eating Philippine eagle that are at once distinct, endangered, and suffer from lack of attention. All I see are their buts. We were able to take a thoroughly enjoyable boat ride on Lake Chamo, whose shores teem with birds, including such typical African species as African Fish Eagle, Goliath Heron the world’s largest, Yellow-billed Stork and the incomparable Hamerkop , a species in its own family. We spotted a young Leopard and his mother in Mago National Park.

23 Crested Serpent-Eagle. 24 Greater Spotted Eagle. David observed that they only flush for eagles, so we stopped and scanned. A couple of minutes later, this one Spotted Eagle soared by. Interestingly, this was the only eagle we saw, even though eagles have typically perched at one end of Mai Po this winter.

It was a good location to observe Brahminy Kites , White-bellied Sea Eagles , Grey-headed Fish Eagles , Oriental Pied Hornbills and Dollarbirds. Squirrels, water monitors, lizards, wild boar, macaque monkeys and more had too often stopped us in our tracks when we heard leaves rustling or odd sounds initially!

But I did pick up some astonishing species, including five broadbills, three pittas, six hornbills, the Storm’s Stork , White-fronted Falconet , Pygmy Ibon , Mountain Black-eye , Mountain Serpent Eagle and Bat Hawk. We managed to see both species of monkey, though – so we were ultimately well satiated. Trees dotted with Channel-billed Toucans and Plumbeous Kites and a two-second topside view of a massive adult Ornate Hawk-Eagle can stir the imagination, though.
