Then, at 6 PM, as the sun disappeared completely over the horizon, the ducks on the pond started massing on the west end of the pond, with many small flocks from all over the pond flying in to the west end until it was basically covered with ducks. What I am getting at here is that I have seen lots and lots of Ruddy Ducks at Jamaica Bay but never one that looked like this particular individual. A good number of these Mexican specialties were firsts for the year: Rufous-capped Warbler , Grace’s Warbler , Rufous-capped Brushfinch , Rusty-crowned Ground-Sparrow , and Yellow-eyed Junco. The domestic ducks were still there, but so were a Gadwall and an American Wigeon. Surprisingly, both were FOY (first-of-year) species.

Blackbirds, as a family, often have those simple descriptive names that are easy to mock ( Yellow-rumped Warbler , ugh) until a non-birder comes describing such a species to you and asking for an ID. Both expected species of loons were around in numbers. The distance made it nearly impossible to capture the action in photographs so I mostly just watched as gulls swarmed, ducks dove, and gannets plunged. Five Field Sparrows in February in Queens is unprecedented for me but that’s how many I counted in that one flock.
