The shallows are full of ducks in eclipse, a real puzzle that requires a bit of time and a sharp eye – something you usually reserve for warblers and such. Wigeons are only migrants and not a breeding species in Serbia and August is a bit too early for any longer distance duck movements. The autumn migration has clearly started.

Personally I wasn’t happy, but I do not live there and do not have a septic tank in my backyard, so I felt that I had no right to complain. Once I observed a man walking his two small dogs here, passing by a perched White-tailed Eagle but looking down at grass and not noticing the largest raptor in Europe at all.

In my imagination, the job of a male Australian Brush Turkey is pretty similar – removing or adding bits and pieces to his pile of rotting vegetation in order to get the right temperature to incubate the eggs buried underneath to hatch. You will not find the Australian Wood Duck in the HBW, as they prefer the name Maned Duck for it.

In winter a few ducks are likely. There is a raised, walled area to the right (north towards the entrance of the bay). The rocks are all easily visible from here and you might even indulge in a spot of sea-watching, which could produce loons and sea-ducks during the winter. They are commonest where they are intensively protected and managed, but these places are often remote and hard to visit. I ducked down excitedly and switched on the read torch, shining the weak light under a large bush, and sure enough there was a North Island Brown Kiwi. Wicked, right? Serendip Sanctuary is a 250 ha protected area that is near the You Yangs and the small town of Lara, Victoria. Although Tawny Frogmouths are well camouflaged I did notice the shape of the tree was not quite right and there they were. Lara is about 20 kilometres from Geelong or 60 kilometres south-west of Melbourne.
