Although little-known, WPAs provide critical breeding, resting, and nesting habitat for millions of ducks, geese, and swans, as well as shorebirds and grassland species.

One or two Tufted Ducks show up at Lake Merritt in Oakland every year, with this drake in particular often lending itself for soul-satisfying views. This is Florida’s second largest lake and was once one of the most productive fishing lakes in the entire country. The high nutrient loading led to massive and unprecedented algal blooms which in turn killed productive plants and changed the once crystal-clear lake into pea soup. My own trip was not an intensive birding experience, and August is clearly not the most productive month. Ducks and herons include Garganey and Ferruginous Duck , Squacco and Purple Herons , as well as the Eurasian Spoonbill. Unfortunately, at the time of writing, wildlife is still more commonly sold to foreign hunters.

The Poo Ponds were very productive and the wildlife was making the most of the water available and the shade provided by the excavating equipment.
