New Zealand had a widespread dabbling duck, the Grey Duck ( Pacific Black Duck if you’re an Aussie) but these were declining a in number because of changes to their habitat.

Starting the New Year by trying to see as many species as possible is something of a birding tradition. My diary notes that the New Year dawned grey and windy, but I rose early, walked six miles before breakfast and noted a modest 26 species of birds. The latter are great bruisers of ducks, built like a small battle ship.

I literally fist-pumped the air when I spotted Long-tailed Ducks and a Surf Scoter. By the time I left the state at the end of January to head back south, I had added 26 species to my 2021 list. Actually, I visited the Two Towers twice, had about 50 bird species each time and about 60 in total, so this is sort of a composite tour description. A few dozen Common Goldeneyes and several Smews are among them but it takes a scope to locate these diminutive ducks. In recent years, two races did become full species.).

Nisqually NWR is a major staging area for migratory birds , a wintering area for many ducks and geese, and a breeding area for numerous songbirds. According to eBird , 278 bird species have been observed and approximately 14,000 checklists have been submitted. Fortunately, the refuge was awash in beautiful Autumn colors.

My visit on Saturday morning was meant to be a quick stop to scan the ducks, geese, and gulls to see if anything interesting was around. The Ruddy Ducks looked miserable but the grebe and the coots seemed to be doing fine. Such a cold Ruddy Duck. Ring-necked Ducks have great eyes. I kind of felt bad for him.

The Skylarks and Northern Wheatears in the barren fields attract all four European species of harrier (but no Montagu’s for Christmas, sorry). If you feel guilty about that, scan the river for ducks and geese and check out the muddy margins. Merlin and Short-Eared Owl are almost a “dead cert” in winter.

At the snowy Danube riverbank, we are waiting for geese to come to their roost inside the mostly submerged island. A shot or two coming from the opposite bank, but they do not sound like geese shooting – more like boar hunting. Scanning the water for rarer species… S. warns me of two locally rare Bean Geese.

The dam provided me with several new birds, including Green Pygmy-geese, Bar-breasted Honeyeaters, Wandering Whistling Ducks, Intermediate Herons, Pied Herons, Comb-crested Jacanas, Forest Kingfishers, Black-faced Cuckoo-shrike , and the afore mentioned Rufus-banded Honeyeater. I finally found one of those Lesser Black-backed Gulls I’ve been chasing all winter, a worthy replacement for the rare geese I hoped to find at Braddock Bay’s North Marina. They found twenty-four species of ducks, geese, and swans, not bad for a half-day.

My husband and I pulled through the gates of the refuge an hour or so from sunset, already invigorated by the Snow Geese, ibises, and Greater White-fronted Geese we had seen feeding in the fields near Lacassine’s entrance. The water was generally open, edges rimmed with cattails and other bronze-hued emergent vegetation.

On May 2nd we bush walked to an ephemeral lake approximately 55 kilometres/34 miles from Broome with my Mum, who also enjoys birds and walking, to find more ducks present than on our previous visit a couple of weeks ago. Looking across to the far side of the lake we noticed a very large duck and it was swimming close to the edge.

I observed this species in the Little Rann of Kutch in India and since then, have been burning with desire to see them back home. First stop and – bingo – Northern Shoveler , the last of the common duck species that I haven’t seen this winter. And among them are, a bit surprisingly, several diving Smews. Blip-blip!

We saw both, though the goose flock was too distant to pick out the Ross’s and Cackling Geese that are usually tucked within. Following the easy tick of a long-staying Harlequin Duck at the pier in Rodanthe, things got harder.

Over 200 species of birds can be found on the refuge, depending on the time of year. This cold weather and snow does not seem to have much effect on the huge number of ducks and geese, but the smaller song birds, all seem to wake up much later in the days, and only after it has warmed up a bit.

Like several of my favorite NWRs, this one was established as a haven for migratory birds, most notably waterfowl, during the bad old days when uncontrolled hunting and habitat loss had put the future of even species we now think of as common in doubt. I submitted five checklists from four different locations yielding 44 species. Lema Ranch has several ponds and is always a great spot for waterfowl but I was surprised to find four Snow Geese on secluded pond! All in all, I tallied 44 species. Wild Turkeys were out in full display.
