We missed the snakebird but had no problems seeing Black-bellied Whistling Duck , Least Grebe , Northern Jacana , Green Heron , Neotropic Cormorant , and both Amazon and G reen Kingfisher. One of the many research stations owned by Zamorano lies high in the mountains on the way to Tegucigalpa.

At these places they are neither shy nor reed-dependent but can often be seen grazing on lawns like cows or swimming on open ponds no less visible than a rubber duck in a bath tub. Late summer 2023 the lakes and ponds had been empty, presumably because the ducks and geese were moulting. Empty no more, the ponds were now brimming with ducks of all creeds and persuasions – it was spectacular. If there were such a thing as a Periodic Table of Ducks we went from hydrogen to uranium: every duck imaginable was there.

Now and then individual catfish of various species hunt nearer the surface and larger catfish such as the American Channel Cat will take a duck or other water bird. After lazing in the heat I decided to visit the forest pools one last time, hoping for another sighting of Hartlaub’s Duck or White-bellied Kingfisher. Tommy Thompson Park Bird Research Station in Toronto had an extremely rare and beautiful Townsend’s Warbler x Black-throated Gray Warbler which was banded in April.
