Still, this way or another, the year is ending with some glorious species, e.g. a rare Greater Spotted Eagle. Simply, they are among the most beautiful ducks around. When discussing this topic for local media, I often say that because of their White-tailed Eagles , the Scottish island of Mull makes 2 million pounds per year from birders alone. Defining Belgrade bird specialties is the hard part – there is no defined criterion, beside attractiveness which often comes from how uncommon some species is.

As an adult Bald Eagle and a first of the season flock of Tree Swallows flew overhead, several birds were cleaning up underneath the feeders. All in all, I tallied 44 species. The upside for me, not to take away from my day with 27 different bears, was the next 6 days all by myself on Kodiak Island, recording as many new bird species as I could find. It’s the place to learn your African waterbirds, particularly ducks. The deep reedbeds and pools hide many species, including some hard-to-see hippos!

In early August this year, I saw 77 species here (69 on the lake, plus 8 more in the surrounding areas) but barely more than a thousand individuals. There was a Short-toed Eagle ahead, taking flight to be replaced by another ST Eagle. Spring (migrants and breeding species) and winter (wintering waterbirds). Best seasons.

Over 200 species of birds can be found on the refuge, depending on the time of year. This cold weather and snow does not seem to have much effect on the huge number of ducks and geese, but the smaller song birds, all seem to wake up much later in the days, and only after it has warmed up a bit.

In winter, try to bird the “Golubac Sea” (scope necessary), where good species include Smew , Velvet Scoter and Common Eider ; while the cliffs and quarries near the mediaeval Golubac Fortress offer the elusive Wallcreeper (which still eludes me, although I’ve tried this area last winter). The birding is not exceptional, but you can easily see some of Singapore’s and South-east Asia’s more common species and it does throw up the occasional jewel. My personal list for Paser Ris runs to 75 birds over 15 visits that average out at around 25 species per outing. My favourite site in Singapore is Paser Ris. Spotted Wood-owl.
