In an unhurried half-day of birding, we racked up over 90 species, including killers like Denham’s Bustard , Northern Carmine-throated Bee-eater , and Shelley’s Rufous Sparrow. The raptors exceeded expectations in both quantity and quality, with lots of vultures, eagles, and a magnificent Beaudouin’s Snake-Eagle.

What is now recreated of the lake where the god Apollo was married and where the Argonauts built their kingdom is officially called the Reservoirs of the former Lake Karla. It was an odd feeling to be back at the “former lake” which I birded in 2019, before the pandemic.

The upside for me, not to take away from my day with 27 different bears, was the next 6 days all by myself on Kodiak Island, recording as many new bird species as I could find. Most locals just leave off the “Resplendent” and refer to this mega unbelievable bird as “Quetzal”, and that does work locally but since there are other species of quetzals, I like “the R. ”, he or she is talking hawk, hawk-eagle, kite, and so on. A sparrow : This one depends on how it is said.

Although the tide was in we were still able to observe several species of shorebird on Pulau Sekudu. One bird species that we had hoped for during our visit to Singapore was the White-rumped Shama. As an adult Bald Eagle and a first of the season flock of Tree Swallows flew overhead, several birds were cleaning up underneath the feeders. All in all, I tallied 44 species. In early August this year, I saw 77 species here (69 on the lake, plus 8 more in the surrounding areas) but barely more than a thousand individuals. There was a Short-toed Eagle ahead, taking flight to be replaced by another ST Eagle. Spring (migrants and breeding species) and winter (wintering waterbirds). Best seasons.
