Agapanthus are in full flower everywhere at the moment and line farm drive-ways and parts of the trail. There have been good numbers of Australian Wood Ducks near the dam recently. I am a birder and I can claim that out of Serbia’s total of 350+ bird species, highly urbanised inner city areas of Belgrade hold almost 100 birds, while the outskirts have more than 200 species. eBird says that, at the time of writing (April 2017), there are some ten hotspots that have crossed the 100 bird species mark.

The Veliko Ratno Island birdlist is about 170 species long, of which more than 90 were observed from the Dorcol Promenade. Highlight species: Ferruginous Duck , Goosander , Red-breasted Merganser , Red-crested Pochard , Greater Scaup , Velvet Scoter , Black-throated Diver. In March and November, Common Cranes are a possibility.

These manmade lagoons in the middle of east Florida farmland and subdivision became bird magnets, as critical for birds and birders as it is for the surrounding communities and farms. Even so, the eagles went hungry while we were there. If there’s a more elegant species in Florida I’m not sure I’ve ever seen it.
