However – and I am not saying this out of misplaced national pride – there is one bird in the Netherlands that proves Jefferson wrong and Buffon right: the White-tailed Eagle (or Sea Eagle ). It’s the only Dutch eagle. Our eagle makes Baldy look imparfait, even a bit manqué. So it was this day. Buffon 5 – Jefferson 0.

Passing by the Ecka fish farm, the largest inland fish farm of Europe, we visited the Belo Jezero Lake to pick Ferruginous Duck , Black and Whiskered Terns , Pygmy Cormorant , Squacco Heron , Eurasian Spoonbill , Great Reed and Savi’s Warblers. Also along the Tamis River, our next hotspot was a fish farm in the Sakule Village.

In the end, I opted for the Tamis River floodplain, north of Belgrade, and its fish farms, some non-operational, some selling daily angling licenses. Driving with open windows (to hear the birds) becomes unbearable and I am heading out of this fish farm. An immature White-tailed Eagle. The same eagle?

My pre-breakfast list was wildfowl dominated, the 10 species I saw ranging from Black-necked Swans to the endemic Falkland Islands Flightless Steamer Duck. The latter are great bruisers of ducks, built like a small battle ship. With bulk like that, it’s no wonder that they gave up flying long ago.

Pied Avocet by Boris Okanovic Next we find ourselves at the famous fish farm in the village of Sakule. Ecka Fish Farm by Mileta Cekovic Soon we reached the Ecka Fish Farm, a part of the wider Carska Bara Important Bird Area (yet, not a part of the protected Carska Bara Reserve). Protest indeed!

Still, this way or another, the year is ending with some glorious species, e.g. a rare Greater Spotted Eagle. I observed my first GS eagles in India some 8 years ago, then the first for Europe in Greece only last December , and finally I have them in my home country list. Simply, they are among the most beautiful ducks around.

This weekend, we all enjoyed the sight of a Bald Eagle perched in a farm field along the highway, an uncommon spot for an uncommonly charismatic avian. Three owls, Common Eiders , Lesser Black-backed Gulls , an Orange-crowned Warbler , a wide variety of dabbling ducks: the list goes on and on!
