His delay would cost him too, as Ryan and I were treated to a fly-by Red-headed Woodpecker , only the second time we’ve had one on the count! We managed to get almost all of them and when I picked up Black-bellied Plover I figured we had saved all of our never-missed because we only had Downy Woodpecker left to save.

I was high and happy, not from “420” drugs but from the altitude and the anticipation of seeing woodpeckers and owls I had never seen before. Late summer 2023 the lakes and ponds had been empty, presumably because the ducks and geese were moulting. What is 100% true is the flight number I took into Denver: 420.

The description of the Bar-winged Flycatcher-shrike on the same site is not much less exuberant: “While the Bar-winged Flycatcher-shrike may not rank as Nepal’s most renowned bird, its striking looks, fascinating habits, and contribution to the vibrant bird community definitely make it worth noticing.” A bad one, admittedly.

Whenever I acquire new equipment I usually test it at one of two very different locations: A forested hill on the outskirts of Belgrade ( great place for woodland birds such as the Black Woodpecker (Dryocopus martius) and Eurasian Treecreeper ( Certhia familiaris ) and the Beljarica Foreland (for waders, ducks, etc.).

Red-rumped Woodpeckers are the least encountered of the three woodpecker species found on Tobago, and this was only the second time I was able to photograph them properly. The Red-rumped Woodpecker is a strange one: on Tobago it is a forest resident while on Trinidad you are far more likely to encounter it in mangrove habitat.

Definitely, lack of songbirds. While driving along the Trekvaart canal I spotted hundreds of Tufted Duck with a nice sprinkling of Smew , Common Pochard and Common Goldeneye.
