I can hear the mooing of cows, interrupted by gunshots, while two scared flocks of ducks fly above the delta. The cows, let free to walk to the nearest wet meadows, are coming in my direction. Around me is a wet meadow used by the cows whose path I dared to cross. Short-toed Snake-eagle. Saxicola rubetra.

There were 23 cows killed; some had to be shot up in trees where they were stuck. Ben Lizdas at Eagle Optics provided immediate assurance that they would do something. In fact, Eagle Optics did more than they initially suggested they would. The devastation is exactly what you would expect after a tornado. Chaos and insulation.

The few missing birds on Poas would be the Three-wattled Bellbird, Bare-necked Umbrellabird, and Solitary Eagle. The cotingas are missing because the forests they used to migrate to at lower elevations have been gone for some time, replaced by pasture for cows.

On our last morning, we drove out to the Carson Lake Wetlands , following long and dusty trails through cow pastures and marshy terrain. The place was lousy with Swainson’s Hawks , and we may even have spotted a distant Golden Eagle. The best, in my opinion, was saved for last.

Many are familiar with dissecting owl pellets, but several birds will caste a pellet including hawks, eagles, gulls, herons and heck, I once witnessed a Scissor-tailed Flycatcher hack up a small one. For example, since eagles and hawks tend to rip their prey apart and have stronger digestive acids, their pellets look like wads of fur.

In fact, the very first person to guess, Nick , managed to get the third quiz picture correct by calling it a Bald Eagle. Of course, that was the easiest of the three because though the bird in the image is captive, a bird that was injured and can’t be returned to the wild, Bald Eagles do occur regularly and naturally in Queens.

By the cliffs we find several Eurasian Crag-Martins and a consolation species – a family of Golden Eagles in the air! Cows and water buffaloes grazing the dried up lakebed under the imposing shadow of Mt. That was my initial ID, it is a Clanga type eagle and the Lesser was the one I commonly find here. Enough of the mountains.

Continuing along the rail trail I soon add a Wedge-tailed Eagle , Spotted Dove , Striated Thornbills , Varied Sittellas , Eastern Spinebill and Grey Shrike-thrush. Two Australian Magpies had discovered a Wedge-tailed Eagle roosting at the top of a very tall tree. Wedge-tailed Eagle. Two Cattle Egrets with four cows!

The local Bald Eagles are getting busy, I suspect there is an egg in the nest. These birds include a cave-dwelling bird that is so oily it can be used as a lamp and a bird that has claws on its wings and a stomach like a cow. It is interesting to note that the vast majority of birds flying by out there are going the other way.

Bald Eagle. A young Bald Eagle , our second of the day, preceded us onto the pond but the first good birds we spotted on the actual pond were a quartet of Northern Pintails that conveniently flew right past us. The Yellow-breasted Chat cooperated enough to let us all see it and we continued along, adding more and more birds.

Orlando is so rich in roadside and overhead birds that I kept a list of species seen from the car which ran to 30+ on the first morning and included a Bald Eagle nonchalantly sitting on a street lamp by a Target store. This is not good habitat for a Redgannet ; I had to get out of line. What a show … er … show-off!
