The next spring she reported that her first class was doing very well and were able to rapidly identify nearly 200 species. There were 23 cows killed; some had to be shot up in trees where they were stuck. Ben Lizdas at Eagle Optics provided immediate assurance that they would do something. That blew my mind.

Many are familiar with dissecting owl pellets, but several birds will caste a pellet including hawks, eagles, gulls, herons and heck, I once witnessed a Scissor-tailed Flycatcher hack up a small one. For example, since eagles and hawks tend to rip their prey apart and have stronger digestive acids, their pellets look like wads of fur.

On a trip to Suriname to find and film some of these spectacular species I was blown away by the birding. Suriname has approximately 735 recorded species, with many more to still be added to its total list. The surrounding grounds are a great introduction to some common, but nonetheless interesting, species.

By the cliffs we find several Eurasian Crag-Martins and a consolation species – a family of Golden Eagles in the air! The next morning is for the Kerkini Lake, one of the youngest national parks of Greece, protected only ten years ago, in 2006 and inhabited by 11 amphibian, 27 reptilian, 44 mammal and 312 bird species.

In fact, the very first person to guess, Nick , managed to get the third quiz picture correct by calling it a Bald Eagle. Of course, that was the easiest of the three because though the bird in the image is captive, a bird that was injured and can’t be returned to the wild, Bald Eagles do occur regularly and naturally in Queens.

Sometimes it is too late, as they are deceased and Brahminy Kites and White-bellied Sea-Eagles usually take advantage of the situation. The most common species we see are the Stoke’s Sea Snake Astrotia stokesii , Dubois’ Sea Snake Aipysurus duboisii and the Olive Sea Snake Aipysurus laevis. Thanks for visiting!

The local Bald Eagles are getting busy, I suspect there is an egg in the nest. The birds were too far away to identify, and I know more than one species does this, but if I had to guess they were starlings. If half the Warblers go extinct, that would be a lot of species but you’d still pretty much have Warbler DNA.

Continuing along the rail trail I soon add a Wedge-tailed Eagle , Spotted Dove , Striated Thornbills , Varied Sittellas , Eastern Spinebill and Grey Shrike-thrush. Two Australian Magpies had discovered a Wedge-tailed Eagle roosting at the top of a very tall tree. Wedge-tailed Eagle. Two Cattle Egrets with four cows!

Sadly, four other teams did as well, and we finished fourth with our 123 species. Bald Eagle. Every bird counted as one so common and uncommon species were all appreciated. By the time we left Fort Tilden it was not yet 9AM and we already had almost seventy species checked off the list. Blackpoll Warbler.

I also often observe a pair of Wedge-tailed Eagles towards the hills on my left as I follow this section of trail. There is a water trough for the dairy cows, but sometimes the Pacific Black Ducks take advantage of the trough! I always approach the bridge slowly to see what bird species are below and around the area.

Orlando is so rich in roadside and overhead birds that I kept a list of species seen from the car which ran to 30+ on the first morning and included a Bald Eagle nonchalantly sitting on a street lamp by a Target store. This is not good habitat for a Redgannet ; I had to get out of line. What a show … er … show-off!
