However – and I am not saying this out of misplaced national pride – there is one bird in the Netherlands that proves Jefferson wrong and Buffon right: the White-tailed Eagle (or Sea Eagle ). It’s the only Dutch eagle. Our eagle makes Baldy look imparfait, even a bit manqué. Skeins of Greylag Geese completed the picture.

Then we detoured into the center of Villahermosa, to see the Northern Potoo that spends each day in the garden of one of Rolando’s family members. I told Rolando I didn’t feel I was really in Tabasco, because I had yet to see a cow standing in water. Then we saw a cow, standing in water.

By the cliffs we find several Eurasian Crag-Martins and a consolation species – a family of Golden Eagles in the air! Cows and water buffaloes grazing the dried up lakebed under the imposing shadow of Mt. That was my initial ID, it is a Clanga type eagle and the Lesser was the one I commonly find here.

I also often observe a pair of Wedge-tailed Eagles towards the hills on my left as I follow this section of trail. There is a water trough for the dairy cows, but sometimes the Pacific Black Ducks take advantage of the trough! There is a family of feral foxes that I often encounter near Bennison Creek. Pacific Black Ducks.

Lot of wrens and thrushes : Quite a few members of these families also chatter and sing from thickets and forest. The few missing birds on Poas would be the Three-wattled Bellbird, Bare-necked Umbrellabird, and Solitary Eagle. Brown Violetears can be common.

On our last morning, we drove out to the Carson Lake Wetlands , following long and dusty trails through cow pastures and marshy terrain. The place was lousy with Swainson’s Hawks , and we may even have spotted a distant Golden Eagle. The best, in my opinion, was saved for last. Would I return to Spring Wings?
