It was odd to realize that with a temperature of 85 degrees F and a breeze, I felt like “fall” had begun in Northwest Florida. Here and there, spits of pale sand became playgrounds for families and dogs, or hunting areas for Great Blue Herons. These river areas of Northwest Florida always strike me as mysterious.

Two Great Horned Owl chicks had successfully fledged from Veteran’s Park at Baywalk , a small park that was once a three-hole golf course on Okaloosa Island. Southern Cassowary with chicks by Duncan Wright Carlos Sanchez was particularly appreciative of a new bird for him in Florida. This bird represented only the second documented record of this species in Florida. Northern Florida represented a refreshing change of scenery and an opportunity to explore with a renewed sense of discovery.

This of course raises questions of what happens when all of the inland nesting grounds of all the loons becomes covered with glacial ice during ice ages, then later, the ice melts and the lakes return. At least she contributed to science… My Best Bird of the Year was a Snowy Plover , which I first spotted along the Florida Panhandle.
