The real cheese comes in the form of Pinnated and Least Bitterns , Lesser Yellow-headed Vulture , Nicaraguan Grackles , Nicaraguan Seed-Finch , and chances at everything from Jabiru to Aplomado Falcon. Ruddy-breasted Seedeaters are also common at Medio Queso. Yeah, Medio Queso is one of the best birding hot spots in Costa Rica.

It was exciting to discover local Peregrine Falcons surveying Bolinas Lagoon and getting to know the tides helped me find secretive Clapper Rails on the edge of SF Bay. I felt so lucky to watch generations of hawks emerge from that park.

You can see that they forage much like chickens, eating seeds, leaves, and flowers from grasses, shrubs, and trees as well as insects. Their main aerial predators are the Cooper’s Hawk and Sharp-shinned Hawk, but they are also taken by Red-tailed Hawks, Northern Harriers, Prairie Falcons and American Kestrels.

Duncan Mar 21st, 2011 at 2:58 pm I guess it would have to be the New Zealand Falcon I saw at Karori. Chicken Skin! I counted 88 after grabbing the binos from inside the house and that was just the tail end of the flock!! I’ve seen them a few times before in Wellington but this was my first time in the sanctuary itself.
