Among 60 or so heron species in the world this is the only one using this peculiar fishing technique. The lady living on a farm by the Gaborone Dam said ‘I saw a croc taking an egret.’. The road was lined with scrub and short trees, and I spotted not one but two new sparrow species. They perched atop electric poles, on fences, and even on roofs of nearby farm buildings (Point Reyes allows cattle farming), and I soon lost count of how many large raptors we had seen.

Fortunately for everyone but the farmers, it was mostly farm fields that were flooded, but roads, buildings, and homes certainly felt the effects of high water as well. We were there for the birds!

Agapanthus are in full flower everywhere at the moment and line farm drive-ways and parts of the trail. When I returned to the small dam where there had been so many Australian Wood Ducks earlier in the day I discovered that the eleven cows had been joined by two Cattle Egrets.
